The evolution of data privacy has been continuing for many decades. During the early days of smartphones, privacy issues were not as prominent as today. The reason was that mobile phones were used for only basic communication during those days. Besides, the devices had limited connectivity and data storage capabilities.

However, smartphone usage increased and evolved significantly over time due to cutting-edge technologies. It has become an integral part of our daily lives. These days, smartphones work as our personal assistants, communication tools, and gateway to the virtual world. These advancement has increased concerns regarding data privacy and security.

The increased dependence on smartphones, advanced technologies, and growing concern for data privacy and security is the real reason behind the evolution of data privacy on mobile devices.

Evolution of Data Privacy

The era of modern smartphones started with the launch of the Apple iPhone in 2007. Before it, people were not much concerned about data privacy and protection. When the iPhone launched, its apps could easily access your data without notifying you. And that was the time when permission prompts were introduced.

When I was doing research for this article, I noticed that in the last 15 years, there were many privacy-related controversies erupted. In order to fix it, many solutions came up (for both iOS and Android).

Let’s briefly check out the challenges and solutions that emerged and evolved in the field of data privacy on mobile devices.

2007 – 2010

There were no privacy controversies in the first few years of smartphone launch. The reason behind it is people did not look for them.

For example, when smartphones were launched, advertisers were using your smartphone’s PDI – permanent device identifier to track for advertising. For five years, the same practice was continued.

2007 – Apple has launched iPhone

2008 – Apple launched the App Store with the capability to turn on and off the location service. In the same year, T-Mobile released its first phone with Google’s Android OS. Google also launched its app store named Android Market.

2009 – It was when mild privacy controversies emerged because of the iPhone’s Dragon Dictation application. This app was uploading names directly from the user’s contact list to its servers.

2010 – 2014

It was when people started to realise privacy concerns because of the implication of the always-on computer feature. The third-party apps were able to access user’s data.

2010 – iOS 4 included app-specific permission. And that for location data. In the same year, some investigation articles were published by The Wall Street Journal that your applications are watching you.

2012 – The news came to light that the Path app is uploading its user’s complete address book to its server. To resolve the issue, Apple introduced app-specific privacy permission in iOS 6. Now, apps need to take explicit permission to access location, contacts, reminders, photos, calendars, etc.

2014 – Another controversy emerged with the news that the popular game Angry Bird was using information about users or players, incorporating demographics, location, etc. In the same year, lots of celebrities’ iCloud accounts were hacked, and their photos were published online. It was when Apple started implementing two-factor authentication system-wide in iOS 9.

2015 – 2019

It was when the people realised it was required to solve the location data issue.

2015 – iOS 9 blocked the capability of various apps to see which other apps were used by iPhone owners.

2018 – The reports showed many apps sent data to Facebook via its SDK.

2019 – The Wall Street Journal highlighted that period-tracking app Flo was sending consumers’ personal data to Facebook.

2020 – To Present

We are halfway through the second decade of the mobile device era. It is the time when people realise how important privacy is. And all the above data privacy controversies have played a significant role.

2020 – Android 11 has introduced one-time permissions, auto-reset feature, camera and mic indicators.

2021 – Apple launched an app tracking privacy and privacy labels. Now, the opt-in model will track advertising.

2022 – Recently, Google launched a privacy label for Google Play.

Data protection is vital because nowadays we use smartphones 24/7, and that’s why we are at high risk of data breaches, which can even lead to financial losses, reputation damage, and theft. So, to improve data privacy on mobile devices, you need to follow the below tips and tricks.

  • Whether using an iOS or Android phone, turn off personalised ad tracking.
  • Make sure the app you are downloading you need it.
  • Focus on the permissions that the app is requesting. If you find any app asking for strange permissions, don’t install it.
  • Limit what applications can do in the background.
  • If you are not using any app, please delete it.
  • Check for additional privacy settings in the app.

Future Trends in Data Privacy on Mobile Devices

As we advance, many innovative technologies like AI, Blockchain, and IoT are evolving, and privacy concerns are also increasing. However, we can expect the following future trends in mobile data privacy.

  • We can expect improved encryption technologies in future, which will offer stronger protection.
  • Fingerprint scanning and facial recognition will improve to provide more secure access to mobile devices.
  • More emphasis will be given to building privacy-centric applications.
  • Governments will introduce stricter privacy policies to safeguard user data, hold companies responsible for data breaches, and enhance transparency.
  • As cutting-edge technologies like AR, IoT, AI, etc, are emerging, privacy risk will also increase. Therefore, mobile data security will require adapting and addressing associated privacy risks and potential vulnerabilities.
