The Dangers of Public USB Charging Stations: How to Avoid ‘Juice Jacking’

Three small words can hit you hard, especially when you are not expecting them. No, not THOSE three words, but it is “Low Phone Battery.” When caught in such a situation while on the go, public USB charging is a convenient solution to keep your devices powered. However, it comes with a hidden risk: juice jacking. Cybercriminals can exploit these harmless ports to steal sensitive data or install malware on connected devices. This article will discuss what juice jacking is, how it works, and tips and tricks to protect yourself from it.

What is Juice Jacking?

It is one type of cyber attack. It happens when the hacker uses your smart phone’s charger to steal data. In it, hackers use public charging stations to install malware on devices which are connected to them. This malware can lock the device or export sensitive information like personal data and passwords to cybercriminals. This stolen data can be used for various malware activities like identity theft, unauthorised access to your online accounts, etc.

Do you know why it is called juice jacking? The reason is simple – It is because the hacker uses the charging procedure to “jack” data from your smartphone. Juice jacking is a dangerous attack because it is probably not possible to tell whether or not your charger has been compromised.

Generally, juice jacking happens in two ways.

1. Via public charging stations

Whenever you use a public charging station to charge your phone, you have no control over that device. These public charging stations can usually be found in railway stations, coffee shops, airports, and other public places. These public charging stations can be hacked, aiming to access your smartphone’s personal data.

2. Using malicious charging cables

The other way juice jacking happens is by using a malicious charging cable. They look like regular cables. However, they are modified and incorporate extra hardware that lets hackers access your phone’s data.

How does Juice Jacking Work?

There are various ways in which juice jacking works. The widely used way in which juice jacking occurs is through data theft from your phone/device. It could incorporate personal information like financial information, login credentials, and other sensitive data.

The other way is via malware installation. It could let hackers remotely access and control your smartphone. Also, it lets them steal data from it.

It can also happen through a man-in-the-middle attack. In it, the hacker captures data that is being transferred between your device and the charging station/cable. It lets the hacker access and steal sensitive data.

Tips and Tricks to Protect Yourself from Juice Jacking

Here are a few tips and tricks to protect yourself from juice jacking at public charging stations.

  •   You should use your charging cables and devices. When you use your cable and device, you are sure they are not compromised and safe.
  •   Avoid using public charging stations, especially if they are unfamiliar or poorly maintained. If you come across a public charging station you don’t recognise, it is best to look for another one.
  •   Never leave your phone unattended whenever it is charging. If you leave your smartphone unattended at a public charging station, it is vulnerable to theft or tampering.
  •   Utilise a portable charger such as a power bank. It is an appropriate way to keep your phone charged whenever you are travelling. Therefore, you don’t have to depend on charging stations/cables.
  •   You should use the wireless charger because it does not need a physical connection. Therefore, they are not susceptible to juice jacking.
  •   Don’t use unfamiliar charging cables. If someone offers you a charging cable you don’t recognise, don’t use it. It is possible that a malicious charging cable is designed to steal your data.
  •   Use the USB condom, which is a tiny device that you can utilise to safeguard your smartphone from juice jacking. It acts as a blockade between your smartphone and the charging station and prevents data transfer.

How to Secure Your Phone?

You need to keep in mind the following tips to protect your phone.

  •   You must enable encryption on your smartphone. It makes it harder for hackers to access your data using juice jacking. Ensure your smartphone is encrypted. Also, they should be updated with cutting-edge security patches.
  •   Ensure your smartphone’s OS and antivirus software are up to date. It will help safeguard against malware which might be transmitted via a charging port.
  •   You must enable 2FA. It adds an extra security layer to your phone.

Concluding Remarks

In summary, juice jacking is a real threat, but following the above tips and tricks can protect your sensitive information and reduce the risk. If you’re out running errands and none of the above tips and tricks work, the best option is to let your battery run down. Unplug yourself from the real world. Of course, your FOMO might strike, but it is always better to be proactive and protective about your personal data.
